Acer Recall of Sony Laptop Batteries

Consumer Product Safety Commission, today announced a voluntary recall of about 27,000 rechargeable lithium ion battery containing cells manufactured by Sony Energy Devices Corp. Under certain circumstances, these batteries may overheat and pose a potential fire hazard. As announced previously by the CPSC, there have been 16 reports of notebook batteries overheating. These reports were associated with earlier recalls by other notebook computer manufacturers of batteries containing these Sony cells. None of these reports involved batteries in Acer notebook computers, however, the company is cooperating with the U.S. Safety Commission Consumer Products and Sony to act in the interest of customer safety.

Acer laptop with these batteries were sold from May 2004 to November 2006. The laptops were sold primarily through Acer authorized resellers and electronics stores nationwide. Only lithium-ion batteries with the following part numbers and battery week codes, used in the following Acer notebook models, are included in the recall - Acer TravelMate series beginning with: 242x, 320x, 321x, 330x, 422x, 467x, 561x, C20x and Acer Aspire Series: 556x, 560x, 567x, 930x, 941x, 980x.

Step 1: For the United States and Canada check to see if you have one of the Acer laptop models above.

Step 2: Determine if you have a battery pack subject to this replacement program. To determine if your Acer laptop battery is involved in the replacement program, you must have both your laptop model and serial number available battery. To find the serial number of the battery, disconnect the computer's battery. You can use the AC adapter to power your computer.
